Most edits should only touch a small part of the image. This page covers the wording and the workflow that keep a character, a palette, or a composition intact while you change something else.
Overview
AI edits are probabilistic: unless a change is scoped, the model is free to redraw anything. Preservation is about narrowing that freedom — through explicit wording, through layers, and through editing the smallest area that solves the problem.
There are two reliable ways to protect something. Say clearly in the instruction that it must not change, or move it out of the AI's reach entirely by making it a layer.
Why this matters
Once a design is close to finished, unwanted change is the main risk. Every uncontrolled edit is a chance to lose the version you liked.
Preservation also protects paid-for progress: fewer accidental redraws means fewer credits spent recovering ground you had already covered.
Step-by-step guide
Step 1: Decide precisely what must not move
Character, composition, palette, and lighting are the four things worth naming explicitly.
Step 2: Write a scoped instruction
State the single change, then state what stays unchanged in the same sentence.
Step 3: Prefer the smallest possible edit
Adjusting one region is far safer than adjusting "the overall mood".
Step 4: Move exact elements to layers
Logos, names, and text belong on layers where the AI cannot alter them. See Layers.
Step 5: Check the result against the previous version
Look specifically at the areas you asked to preserve.
Step 6: Roll back if something moved
Restore the previous version and re-scope the instruction more tightly.
Best practices
- Name the preserved elements in every refinement, not just the first one.
- Do the AI work first and the layer work last.
- Change one region at a time, even when you have several fixes in mind.
- Use concrete nouns for what stays: "the samurai", not "the main part".

Layers are the dependable way to place content the AI will not alter. For AI-generated areas, scope the instruction tightly instead.
