Building Better Prompt Chains

Reach a complex design through a deliberate sequence of prompts instead of one enormous one.

A prompt chain is an ordered sequence: establish the composition, then the subject, then lighting and color, then detail, then layers. This page shows how to run one so each step builds on a result you have already approved.

Overview

Complex designs fail as single prompts because everything competes at once. A chain removes the competition by settling one decision per generation and locking it in before moving on.

The order is not arbitrary. Earlier decisions constrain later ones, so anything global — composition, style, lighting — belongs at the front, and anything local — small details, text, logos — belongs at the end.

Why this matters

Chains produce coherent artwork. Because each step inherits an approved base, the final design has one consistent light source, palette, and perspective.

They are also more economical. Fixing a composition problem at step one costs a single generation; discovering it after twenty detail passes costs all of them.

The standard chain

  1. Composition — the shape of the image on a very wide canvas, and where the empty space sits.
  2. Subject — the thing the design is about, placed inside that composition.
  3. Style — the visual language: cel-shaded, painterly, photographic, graphic.
  4. Lighting and color — the light source, time of day, and palette.
  5. Detail — texture, atmosphere, and secondary elements.
  6. Layers — logos, names, and text, added last where the AI cannot alter them.

Step-by-step guide

  1. Step 1: Write the whole chain down first

    Six short instructions, in order. Planning is free; generating is not.

  2. Step 2: Generate step one and approve it

    Do not move on until the composition is right — everything else inherits it.

  3. Step 3: Refine one step at a time

    Each step is a scoped refinement, naming what changes and what stays.

  4. Step 4: Save the version at each milestone

    So a later step can never cost you an earlier win.

  5. Step 5: Stop when the artwork is right

    Extra passes after the design is finished usually reduce quality.

  6. Step 6: Add layers last

    Text, logos, and names go on top of finished artwork. See Layers.

Best practices

  • Keep the same model across a chain for consistent style.
  • Repeat the key style words in each step so the look does not drift.
  • Reuse successful chains as templates for a whole series of designs.
  • If two consecutive steps make things worse, restore and re-plan rather than pushing on.

Frequently asked questions

How many steps should a chain have?

Four to six for most designs. More than eight usually means the concept needs rethinking.

Does each step cost credits?

Yes, each generation or refinement is charged. Chains still tend to cost less overall because they avoid repeated full regenerations.

Can I reuse a chain for a different subject?

Yes — swap the subject step and keep the rest. That is how consistent product lines are made.

What if step three ruins step two?

Is a chain necessary for simple designs?

No. A single strong prompt is fine for a simple design; chains earn their keep on complex ones.
