Why AI Sometimes Changes More Than Expected

The reasons an edit redraws more than you asked for, and how to keep changes contained.

Overview

Image models regenerate images; they do not patch them. Every edit produces a new image that should match your instruction plus the previous design. Where the instruction is vague, the model resolves the ambiguity with its own judgement — and that judgement can touch anything.

Some changes are inherently global. Lighting, mood, style, weather, and time of day cannot be applied to one region without affecting the rest of the picture.

Why this matters

Knowing which instructions are global and which are local tells you in advance which edits are risky, so you can save a version before running them.

It also prevents wasted credits spent trying to undo drift with more generations instead of a rollback.

Step-by-step guide

  1. Step 1: Identify whether your edit is local or global

    If it involves light, style, or mood, expect the whole image to move.

  2. Step 2: Save the current version first

    Confirm which version you are on before running a high-risk edit.

  3. Step 3: Scope the instruction

  4. Step 4: Run one edit

    Do not bundle a global edit with local ones.

  5. Step 5: Compare and decide

    If drift is unacceptable, restore rather than continuing.

  6. Step 6: Split large changes into stages

    Two contained edits beat one sweeping edit almost every time.

No. Regeneration is how image models apply edits. Containing it is a matter of scoping the instruction.

Why does the same edit behave differently on different designs?

Denser, more detailed images have more for the model to reinterpret.
